I like it
The more I read this book, the more I fall in love with it. As cheesy as that sounds, it is completely accurate as of right now, and hopefully I do not grow tired or sick of it. In complete honesty, this is probably my favorite book we have read all year, and I am only on the 40th page. I find Tony's character and story intriguing. Especially his commentary on everything that he explains and every anecdote that he recounts. He is pretentious but not "in your face" pretentious, if that makes sense. I think the way he views the world and his surroundings is pretentious and the way he describes things in such an eloquent manner seems insanely pompous. But at the same time, I love him. He is humorous and slightly quirky. He reminds me a lot of a weird uncle I have (Uncle Carmine- bald, very Italian) and the detailed stories he tells me about his childhood. I like the fact that I feel like I am inside of Tony's mind. Barnes' writing style is particularly focused on the stream of consciousness and allows the reader to gain pretty good insight on what he is thinking and how he analyzes certain situations. The book is strange yet thought provoking and oddly philosophical- something I did not expect when I first began reading it. It has been a pleasant surprise- the depth and philosophy behind the beautiful literature, that is. I really did not want to stop reading tonight, but I am too tired to continue right now. I am excited to pick up the book tomorrow and continue where I left off. It is interesting how he compares life to literature and I want to see where he goes with that particular idea and how he further develops it.
