It is unfortunate
that we are to post every night on this short novel as I think all parts
require the others to truly understand. While I mentioned yesterday that it is
chronological, I feel that which is extracted from the novel and take away
after it is done can only be seen through a full picture. But this picture is
not formed with this same sense of chronology. It seems, to give a metaphor for
a painting, that the picture is appearing in small blotches, randomly so that
nothing can really be discerned in context on the full complete picture. It
seems there is a key to understanding what Tony is doing with his recount but I
don’t know what it is. In fact I don’t even know what type this key would even
form; is it an idea, a word, a person, a place, or something else I am unable
to name in terms of type. Anyway, it still remains a fine read, but that is all
it truly can be at the moment.
Still, some of
the blotches are clearer than before so I would like to look more at the
narrator here. I find him speaking to the reader addressing a ‘you’ that he is
unaware of. He builds on this in order to question himself, but as he
approaches cliffs that he is fully aware of he turns away at the last moment
for a break. When he tries to apply his “theory” to himself on page 48 or when
he has witnessed the Severn Bore on page 39 he is getting at something deep
within himself, but then turns to something else, focusing primarily on Veronica
in this section of the reading. Looking back now I find I have not
characterized the narrator at all. But I do this with an honest intention to
leave that for later. The painting has come into view, but not even the borders
are distinct from the painting itself.
