Plot Twist

I really enjoyed The Sense of an Ending.  Tony kind of rambles on at points and it gets tedious to read, but overall it is an interesting read.  It seems to simple when you first read it, but when you think about it there is so much meaning behind so many lines.  Also many concepts brought up, we have talked about in class this year.  For example, the book brings up death, time, and clarity.  Towards the end the book started getting dull because the same sequence of events kept happening.  Tony would not be able to fight off his urge and would email Veronica.  She would respond and tell them where to meet and at the end she would say, “You just don’t get it, do you?  You never did and you never will,” (page 139).  I never understand what she was trying to get out because she would never explain anything.  Tony would then tell Margaret everything who would get mad and tell him that he’s being stupid.
I did not know where this was all going and I did not expect the ending.  THE ENDING WAS SO UNEXPECTED!!!  It was the biggest plot twist! I literally screamed when I finally understood what had happened between Adrian, Victoria, and Mrs. Ford.  I can’t believe that Mrs. Ford and Adrian had a bay.  That is so unexpected.  However, this makes everything all come together in the end.  I finally understand why Mrs. Ford wanted to give Tony Adrian’s diary.  He is the one who “urged Adrian to consult Veronica’s mother,”(page 162) in his letter.  I also think understand what Adrian was trying to say at the end of the diary page that Veronica let Tony see.  He wrote, “so for instance, if Tony…” and I think the end of the sentence was going to be about if Tony never told me to consult her mother none of this would’ve happened.  However, I and other readers will never be sure what Adrian was trying to say.
Now I want to talk about Adrian’s one page of the diary that we got to read.  Adrian was so intelligent and I find it so interesting.  I didn’t understand most of it until Tony finally understood, but now I understand what he was trying to say.  The integers, b, a1, a2, s, and v stand for baby, Adrian, Anthony (Tony), Sarah (Victoria’s mother), and Victoria.  Therefore the first equation b = s – v + a1 means baby equals Sarah minus Victoria plus Adrian and the second equation a2 + v + a1 x s = b means Tony plus Victoria plus Adriana times Sarah equals baby.  I think these equations are two different ways that Adrian perceives what happened.  Either it could just be between him and Sarah and that’s how they had the baby or Tony could be added into the equation because Adrian supposedly thinks that without Tony this may have not happened.  The whole book connects in the end and I love books that do that and that have surprising endings.
